Anti Virus Protection - Ideas.

Remember the most basic rule: Don't open file attachments unless you know they're legitimate. Scan them to be sure.

Some common viruses exploit flaws in the Outlook Express 'preview pane' feature to run automatically. Use a non-Microsoft email client, such as Eudora, Pegasus Mail, or the Mozilla mail client.

Be careful when downloading files. Ensure that the source is a reputable one.

Back up your files on a regularly. You should store your backup copy in a separate location from your work files, one that is preferably not on your computer.

Avoid opening or downloading or executing any files or email attachments you're not 100% sure of.

The free anti virus protection packages can probably remove your virus infection.

The best of the very few truly free anti-virus programs around.

If you are constantly getting files from other people, or are visiting web sites your mother wouldn't like, you need to download an anti-virus protection program like this, and tick the options to let is run in the background while you work, and when you boot up the PC.

Teenagers especially are always swopping files from dubious sources, and they all know at least one kid who's 'very good with computers', and is getting into writing software: cue the distribution of viruses and other high-jinks.

If you are sharing your PC or laptop with others, and you need it for work, or have important documents on there, I suggest you get another computer for yourself alone, password protect it, and let the kids the missus or your house guests mess up the communal PC.

There nothing quite as annoying as finding your laptop is riddled with virii and spyware, and you have to send important files to other people. How can you be sure your not going infect your CEO with some teen p0rn spyware by doing so?
