Data Rescue - Basic Tips

No. 1: Use your system as little as possible until you recover all of your lost files.
  • Don't copy any files to the disk;
  • Your web browser caches files on the disk - don't use it;
  • Don't launch any unnecessary programs;
  • Don't restart your computer.
No. 2: Free up some disk space. The more free space your system has, the less chance of overwriting any lost files with new ones.
  • Delete old files that you don't need, or move them to a backup drive;
  • Empty your Recycle Bin;
  • Empty your browser cache.

No. 3: If you don't yet have a recovery program, find one and don't install it to the disk where your lost files are located.

Recovery programs work similarly. Select the disk where the lost files are located, let the program analyse the content of the disk, and then select the file you want to recover. Then recover files to another hard drive, network, floppy disk or USB mini flash drive.

After you recover your files, check that they are correct, complete and in working order. Even the best recovery software can't guarantee perfect results. Some parts of your files may have been overwritten. Sometimes partially recovered files can be mended by special utilities.
