Tips to remember when looking for an online law degree

Online schools give students the flexibility of studying at their own pace from anywhere in the world. Students who wish to pursue a career in law but who cannot attend law classes in a regular traditional classroom now have the option of studying law through an online school and earning an online law degree.

A law degree can be earned by successfully completing all the courses necessary in the subject of law. To get an online law degree students enroll in an online school that offers this subject and most subject material is sent via the Internet. Many online law schools allow their students to earn an online law degree entirely on the Internet.

In the United States a law graduate is said to have earned his Juris Doctor (JD) degree, whereas in Australia, Canada and a few other Commonwealth countries a law degree is referred to as LL.B. Many online schools offer students the option of earning their Juris Doctor degree online. However there are a few factors that need to be considered before choosing a particular school with the aim of getting an online law degree.

Executive or Bar program

Students enrolling in an online law program can choose to take either the Executive program or the Bar program. The Bar is a four year program designed to prepare you for the state bar exam, which qualifies you to practice law. The Executive Program on the other hand is a three-year course that is similar to the Bar Program except for the fact that it does not qualify you to take a bar exam in any state.

Accreditation

If you are looking for an online law degree program it is extremely important to make sure that the one you are thinking of choosing is accredited. The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) does accreditation of online schools and online law schools in particular are accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), which is the leading association for attorneys in the United States. Students who earn an online law degree from online schools that are not accredited by the ABA are not allowed to appear for the bar exam in any American state except California. Students who earn an online law degree from programs that are accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State of California can appear for the bar exam only in the state of California.

Fee Structure

Students have the option of choosing from a large number of online schools that offer them an online law degree. Besides checking if the school is accredited by the proper authorities it is equally important to check the fee structure of the school. The tuition fees of online law degree programs are usually much less as compared to that of regular law school at the university. But you would still need to find out if the fees at the online law school of your choice are all inclusive or if there are any additional fees you would need to pay during the tenure of the course.
